About the Project

A Lasting Tribute

The Battlefield Memorial Gateway is a veterans' park under development on the shores of Lake Champlain in the Town of Plattsburgh, on land once used by the US Air Force. Led by the Town of Plattsburgh and the Clinton County American Legion, the park will commemorate Clinton County's role in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, and serve as a launching point for visiting nearby Crab Island.

Why It Matters

Crab Island: Why It Matters

During the War of 1812, American and British soldiers killed in battle were buried in mass graves on Crab Island. Congress recognized the site in 1903 and 1908 as a place of history and honor, and American Legion Post 1619 has restored the island's flagpole and held annual honor visits since 2001. Once the Gateway park is complete, the long-term plan is public boat transportation so visitors can make the trip themselves.

Where the Money Goes

Funding the Gateway

100% of Michigan Fest's 2026 fundraising proceeds go directly toward construction and maintenance of the Gateway, with no overhead and no middleman. The project has also secured early-stage funding support from Assemblyman Billy Jones, with fundraising ongoing through the Gateway's own TD Bank and PayPal donation channels.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. The Battlefield Memorial Gateway Committee operates under the Clinton County American Legion, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. A donation letter is available on request.
